Saint-Georges
The Saint-Georges candle is a tribute to the Foreign Legion, and more particularly to the 1st Foreigner Cavalry Regiment, which I have the honor of serving as a civilian reservist. Saint-Georges is the patron saint of the 1st REC, here is his story: "One day, Georges arrived in a city in Libya named Silenus. Now, in a pond near the city lived a fearsome dragon who, many times, had routed the armies sent against him. Sometimes, he approached the city walls and poisoned with his breath all those who were within his reach. In order to appease the fury of the monster and prevent him from annihilating the entire city, the inhabitants agreed to offer him two sheep every day. Soon, the sheep were in short supply and the inhabitants had to force themselves to replace them with young men drawn by lot. No family was exempt from the draw and the day of the arrival of Saint George, designated him as victim; the only daughter of the king. Georges arrives on this day when, the young princess tied to a rock near the pond, is going to be victim of the dragon. Mounted on his steed, he brandishes his standard high and throws himself bravely on the monster with such passion that he knocks it to the ground. He then says to the princess: "My child, do not fear any more and place your belt around the neck of this monster!" The princess did so and the dragon, straightening up, began to follow her like a small dog that one would lead on a leash. The beast was then led by the princess to the city where it was decapitated.
